On 27 April 2023, our Managing Partner, Alan Chiu, and our Associate, Poyiu Cheung, were invited by the Legislative Council Member, The Hon Mr Kenneth Fok JP, to give a hybrid guest-seminar on the Copyright (Amendment) Ordinance which will be effective from 1 May 2023 and Artificial Intelligence (“AI”).

The hybrid seminar was attended by over 100 stakeholders from the creative and cultural industries, such as music, arts, movie, sports, and publishing, and focused on how the amendments would apply in different real-life scenarios which the industries may encounter. In particular, the seminar covered the topic of AI and copyright, and provided some practical tips on how copyright owners and users may protect themselves and mitigate risks in relation to AI-generated works.

A Q&A session followed whereby the industries’ stakeholders were able to ask Alan for his thoughts and advice following the implementation of the Copyright (Amendment) Ordinance and the implication of AI to the industries.

As copyright plays a crucial part in the protection of creative works, Alan and Poyiu were delighted to have the opportunity to share their legal insight with stakeholders in the industries.
