ELLALAN was pleased to take part once again in this year’s Business of IP Asia Forum, where the legal and business communities came together to exchange views on the evolving IP landscape. The Forum provided a platform for learning, discussion, and engagement on current and emerging IP issues in Hong Kong and beyond.

This year’s Forum included contributions from our Partners across three key sessions.

Our Managing Partner Alan Chiu delivered 𝘐𝘗 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘦 – 𝘓𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘐𝘐𝘐: 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘰𝘱𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘈𝘨𝘦, co-organised with the Intellectual Property Department. His session examined what copyright and designs protect and their validity, enforcement against infringement, as well as emerging legal issues arising from the use of artificial intelligence in creative works.

Our Partner Valerie Suen delivered 𝘐𝘗 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘦 – 𝘓𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘐𝘝: 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘴, also co-organised with the Intellectual Property Department. Her lecture covered registrable and non-registrable marks, how trade marks protect and strengthen brands, strategies for managing and commercialising trade marks, and enforcement options and remedies for infringement.

Alan also participated as a speaker in 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮𝘱𝘩: 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘭 𝘏𝘶𝘳𝘥𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘐𝘗 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, a session co-organised with the Department of Justice. The session was opened with welcoming remarks by The Honourable Paul Lam Ting-kwok, GBS, SC, Secretary for Justice, and was moderated by Theresa Mak, with fellow speakers Helen Tang and Catherine H. Zheng. The discussion explored the rapid growth of IP merchandise, the legal frameworks supporting IP protection, licensing and valuation, and how Hong Kong’s arbitration services can assist in resolving cross border and multi-jurisdictional IP disputes.

We were happy to share and contribute to the discussions at this year’s Forum and to engage with practitioners, policymakers, and industry participants across sectors.
