Our Managing Partner, Alan Chiu, and Associate, Hank Yeung, recently delivered a guest lecture on 𝘓𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘈𝘐: 𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘬𝘴, 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘉𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴 as part of the Chinese Intellectual Property Law programme for LLM/JD students at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU HK).
The session examined how generative AI interacts with IP rights, including copyright subsistence, authorship and infringement in AI-generated works. Alan and Hank also discussed the evolving legal frameworks across major jurisdictions including Hong Kong, Mainland China, the European Union and the United States.
The lecture further addressed the increasing importance of AI governance and regulatory compliance, and provided practical strategies for navigating emerging legal risks — including data privacy, cybersecurity, platform terms and conditions, AI-related disclosure requirements and recent regulatory developments in Mainland China and the EU. The discussion concluded with best practices and legal readiness as AI becomes integrated into enterprise and legal workflows.
Following the lecture, Alan and Hank engaged students in an interactive case study on how Chinese IP brands — including the internationally recognised LABUBU — scale and commercialise globally, illustrating the intersection between IP protection, licensing strategy and cross-border enforcement.
We thank the CityU HK for the invitation and all participating students for their thoughtful questions and enthusiastic engagement.
At ELLALAN, we remain committed to supporting the next generation of legal talent in understanding and navigating the intersection of law, technology and innovation.
