Good day to all those who are interested in each side of art: whether it is painting, sculpture, music or literature. The rest do not get sick either.

Today I will run you through the halls of my museum and show you how exactly the painting appears in games and how it inspires developers to create similar works.

Never unmpetching ancient Greece

The first halls on which we will pass are attributed to us to antiquity. The halls of ancient Egypt and the East are closed for reconstruction, but we have the opportunity to walk through ancient Greece.

Painting on canvases in Greece originated quite late, unlike, for example, sculptures. But this does not mean that the Greeks did not draw at all, on the contrary, they adorned with their creations not only vases, but also the walls of houses, palaces and temples. They applied drawings with mixed paint with wet plaster. When someone talks about antiquity, an unknown person imagines, as a rule, the lack of colors, because most of the surviving sculptures are white. However, this is an erroneous opinion, because the Greeks loved the colors. Almost all of their statues were colored, houses, palaces, temples and also painting on the walls of buildings.

The Greeks painted a lot of things, from patterns, ending with mythological plots. But, of course, preferences were given to people. They tried not just to say that we have a person, but to show his ideal. For this reason, he always looked in excellent physical shape and was beautiful. From ancient Greece, the idealization and aesthetization of people went further along the era.

For example, beautiful Virgo in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey

But men in excellent physical shape

Despite the beauty of man, the drawings of the Greeks were flat. To give their paintings liveliness and volume to their paintings, they add thick lines that begin to look like the shadows. True, work with shadows further than clothes or equipment did not go for the time being. The people themselves paid attention to somewhere in the 5th century, which is strange, given the love of ancient Greece to man. Now the athletic form of men and their beauty stands out darker. The volume and shape of the human body is set.

Shadows that show not only the ideal of a person, but also his faithful horse

And here athletic children frolic with animals

The usual stories in the murals of the Greeks are not so remarkable as to focus on them now. Let’s better take a look at how people illustrated myths.

The first such plot that any Greek can stumble upon – The legend of the defeated typhon.

What is she about?

According to one version, Typhon appeared as a result of the Union of Gaia and Tartar itself. She was so angry at Zeus that she decided to give rise to something so terrifying and strong that a monster was born, which was called Typhon.

According to another version, he appeared as a result of the split of the earth. Zeus’s wife, Hera, was very angry due to the birth of Athena, which occurred without any participation of her wife. Hera was furious with her foot on the ground and a terrible dragon entered the world.

In any case, Typhon appeared, and with him there was a threat to all living.

He looked true in truth: Paul man, half a dragon of incredible sizes. Typhon was so great that he could touch the sunrise with one hand, and the other sunset.

And this monster came out in order to destroy what Zeus dominated over.

Of course, you have to go out and fight the monster. But what is happening? All gods take their children in fear and begin to hide. They join them in the same way. Most likely, if not for the wise Athena, who stopped his father and reminded him that he, in fact, is a great and mighty god, then the world would have ceased to exist. But the Thunderer came to his senses and went to the battle with Typhon.

Their battle was very long and exhausting. Everything was so bad for Zeus that the other gods decided to get out of their scams and help in the battle. True, as a result, not power won, but a trick. Moira, goddesses of fate also came to the rescue. They convinced Typhon that the fruits of the “one -day” plant give physical strength. The monster swallowed the fruit without a second thought and collapsed to the ground without strength. Zeus took advantage of this, grabbed Typhon and drove him to Tartar.

Despite the greatness of the typhone, he, as a result, did not fight alone. For example, his wife came to his aid – Echidna. Of course, she, like Typhon, lost to Zeus. However, the Thunderer released this “snake”. True, she was still killed by the orders of Hera.

And here Harpies, who also participated in the battle. According to one version, they are the children of echidna and typhone.

That’s all in the collection, it turns out. Indeed, pleasant family entertainment.

And here is another remarkable plot that can be observed in many temples in the vastness of ancient Greece.

The legend of the Amur and Psyche on the work of the Apul “Metamorphoses” .

Psyche, the youngest of the daughters of one king, was a girl of incredible appearance. She was so beautiful that she was compared with Venus. Of course, the goddess learned that her unearthly beauty is endowed with some person. She was angry and decided to teach the girl, sending her son Amur. He had to connect Psyche with a miserable and insignificant man. But the cards lay so that he himself fell in love with a girl. It got to the point that the young man drove off all the applicants to the arm and heart.

It took time, and Psyche sat https://gransinocasino.uk/ in the girls. This father was in earnest in earnest. One day he turned to the oracle, and she told him that his daughter was waiting for an extraordinary fate. Well, the king had no choice but to match this prediction. For this reason, he sent Psyche to the top of the cliff so that she was waiting for his fate. And so it happened: the wind of marshmallows rushed to her, and carried it to a huge castle to the Amur. The wealth of the castle was so incredible that it exceeded the state of the father of Psyche.

The enjoyment of the girl went on its own. The only misfortune was that her husband appeared only at night. She decided to recognize her mysterious narrowed sisters. While Amur was asleep, Psyche lit a lamp and brought it to the young man. Struck by his incredible beauty, she dripped with oil on his skin. The husband was very angry at the girl and left her. However, the beauty decided not to leave it so easy. Psyche went in search of her husband. The journey led her to the chambers of Venus herself. Despite the intrigues of the goddess, as a result of Psyche and Amur made up and healed together.

Unlike frescoes, where the battle of Zeus and Typhon is clearly shown, it is difficult to say so right away what the plot is about.

But as developers of the game AC: Odyssey help to push this thought?

Let’s take a closer look at the fresco.

The first thing that catches your eye is Little boy with wings Over a girl and a man. The legend of Amur gave rise to a stereotype about “Kupidon” – a kind of god of love. He moves around the world on the wings and connects the fate of people with his arrows.

Here is another interesting detail – A man on a donkey. Of course, an ignorant person will not pay attention to this, but she can play a role. The fact is that the work of “metamorphoses” is short stories. Their plot is spinning around Lucius, a man whom one witch turned into a donkey. Because of this circumstance, he has to wander between different families and observe their lives.

You can still catch on the fact that one of the girls stands with some veil on the head. It turns out that the wearing for the wedding of the Tight has still gone from ancient Greece. The only discrepancy that can be observed here is the color of the dress – it is blue, not white. The fact is that the girls put on white dresses for a wedding, because they were a symbol of innocence and chastity. However, do not think: if the color of the dress is not white, then the girl is no longer innocent. The blue color in ancient Greece was an attribute of the gods of heaven, Zeus and Hera. He meant devotion and fidelity (despite the fact that Zeus distinguished himself in the concept of “fidelity”)

Well, and the last, but no less important detail is a man who stands behind a donkey. It would be possible to ignore him, if not for laurel wreath On his head. The fact is that this accessory correlates with the patron of art – Apollo. Such a wreath was awarded not only those who were particularly distinguished at the Olympic Games, but also people who were recognized in poetry. The presence of bay leaves and taking into account some more facts can suggest that this man is a writer.

This is what the world of painting of ancient Greece was. It was possible to walk on it yet, but no less interesting work awaits us then. Therefore, they offer here no longer linger, but move forward.

From the Middle Ages to Baroque

Painting, like any other component of culture, develops. Understanding people about the world order are replaced by each other. New views and a new worldview are taken to the agenda. The time of antiquity with polytheism and anthropocentrism has come to an end, and In his place came monotheism and slavery of people before the Almighty. The Middle Ages came.

Speaking of this time, the first thing that can come to mind is icons. Those who have worked such an associative series will not be mistaken. Indeed, icon painting has become an important part of the art of that time. But this will be an incomplete idea of the era. In the Middle Ages an important element of the story of the life of saints and God was also stained glass.

They began to decorate the monastery churches in the 10th century. Later, stained glass windows were made for city cathedrals, the main temples of the diocese and the residence of its bishop. Multi -colored glasses showed both episodes from the Bible and the saints. Due to the fact that not all people could read at that time, the study of the history of Christianity through stained glasses was important. In addition to messages, the painting on the glass brought to a person and the impression. The light penetrating through the windows spilled over the temple, altar, icons and statues with all colors, creating an incredible picture.

However, stained -glass art ceased to be exclusively church nature in the 15th century. Then aristocrats began to order such beauty and exotic. Biblical topics were replaced by secular.

For example, windows in the royal castle are razing. As you can see, stained -glass windows are not showing us not a biblical plot, but quite worldly. The ruler is located in the center, on the contrary, a court jester leads his representation. To the left of the lord of the songs are performed by musicians, and to the right of the jester, the guard is on the protection of order.

Moving further along the halls of our museum, you can stumble upon works of the late or northern revival.

After the Middle Ages in the world of art, a turning point occurs. People begin to think about their mission and understand that it is time to move away from servility to God. Again there is a need for anthropocentrism and a person at the head, as was the same in the ancient era. However, later the revival after several centuries resorts to a religious topic. But instead of outlining it with bright colors, artists resort to gloomy.

Here, for example, is one of the frescoes, which, with its absurdity, wildness and unusuality, resembles one actually existing artist – Jerome Bosch.

He was a radical Christian who loved biblical stories in his works so much that riddles and disputes between specialists still go.

It is difficult to say where the Boskh drew inspiration, creating images, but with confidence we can say that the artist could not occupy fantasies. He knew how to combine a bright visual series with moralizing content.

Here is a praying nun with the head of a creature and an incomprehensible miracle on a horse

But the left tripper sulfur “Temptation of St. Anthony “Jerome Bosch

Having slipped a few more halls, we find ourselves at the threshold in the Baroque era. This time was characterized by fatalism. Crisis of the ideas of the Renaissance comes. 1666 is nearing and the end of the world with it. Plague, Hunger, Mor. Eternal wars. People again turn to the ideas of Christianity, but this time God is not good, but a tyrant. He sends endless torment to a person.

Because of such thinking, people begin to “live one day”. That’s why Baroque is always splendor, tension and luxury.

It is in this era that such a thing appears as a ceremonial portrait. Artists ordered paintings with the image of aristocrats, military figures, rulers and any other significant or rich personalities. Bright details appear that indicate the kind of human activity or its belonging to a higher society. People on ceremonial portraits are always luxurious. The color palette consists of juicy colors.

Here, for example, in the royal castle in the ureight you can find such a picture. The first thing that is striking is the size of the work. Such a large format of the canvas for the portrait is selected for a reason. Artists have different methods to show the significance and importance of personality. The size of the picture also play a role. If small portraits can be carried with you and as it were to be brought to yourself, then on grandiose can only be looked at from distance. Fainting the canvas is also important. As a rule, only the best and expensive frames were chosen for aristocrats.

The next thing you need to pay attention to is the child’s clothes. Before us is not just some kind of daughter of a peasant. She belongs to the highest society, and this is emphasized by the splendor and bright color of her dress. Plus, we see an expensive texture of clothing, which also matters.

Well, and finally – facial expression. This, too, can be said, one of the ways to convey the importance of the model. The artists tried, among other things, to capture the emotions of a person that would help not only to reveal the character of the personality, but also to emphasize its individuality. And an excess of feelings of little Ciri can be written off that the heroes of the Baroque era loved everyone dramatized a little.

What? You accidentally looked into that hall and now be in confusion? It’s okay, this is just a hall with a “grandmother” art in which there is the only and unique exhibit ..

Eh, a beautiful carpet. But we will not linger here and continue to move on.

That, again to antiquity?

The art in different centuries has always jumped from extreme to extreme. Then people praised the “man”, then passed to “God”. This has lasted several centuries. Therefore, in response to eccentricity and some fatal religiosity, anthropocentrism came again, and with it classicism.

People removed all the splendor and instead of it set severity, restraint and cult of the mind.

In painting, classicism was reflected in the plot of paintings. Artists took legends, myths and stories as the basis and showed them in their works. If you did not understand history as such, you could not read the picture. People did not take everything in a row, but chose exclusively those plots in which Morality came down to duty, honor and service to society.

Assassin’s Creed Unity. Jacques Louis David “Fasters’ funeral”

Assassin’s Creed Unity. Jacques Louis David “Fasters’ funeral”

Walking in the game in France of the 18th century, you can stumble upon many works. The paintings are so impressive that the feeling is created that they are remarks of real paintings. In fact, it is. The developers, creating a certain era, did not just draw inspiration from history, they tried to reflect its features in order to immerse the players as accurately as possible at that time.

One of the artists addressed by people from Ubisoft was Jacques Louis David. Pieces of his painting “Fasted funeral” are scattered around the world AC Unity.

This work is so saturated that it is difficult to understand, which, in principle, occurs on the canvas. And a ignorant person will never guess the meaning of the picture, because, as mentioned above, in classicism the painting was a plot. Do not know the plot – you do not understand the artist’s work.

But here we are not going to leave questions open, so let’s “read” what Jacques Louis David portrayed.

Story.

The plot was taken not from the sky, but straight from the Iliad Homer. During 4 battles in the Trojan War, Patrocl, a faithful friend of Achilles, dies. The final, mortal blow is applied to him by Hector. Achilles learns about the death of a comrade and is angry. He decides to take revenge on Hector for a fallen friend and calls him to battle. The battle lasts a long time, but in the end Achilles win.

Bidden Achilles returns back to the camp to prepare the funeral of patrot. In a fit of emotions with tears in his eyes, he promises a comrade that Hector’s corpse will be torn to pieces by dogs, and 12 captive young men will be sacrificed to the rest of the soul of a friend.

With these thoughts it goes to the night, where the ghost of the fallen comrade comes to him. He asks his body to be handed over to the fire as soon as possible, since it is difficult for him to enter the kingdom of the dead. Plus, Patrocla predicts the death of a courageous warrior, therefore leaves another wish: that their bones are buried together.

Naturally, Achilles is not going to refuse a friend, so the next morning all preparations for the funeral are taking place.

Agamemnon collects people and orders to conduct firewood for a funeral fire. Achilles tells his warriors to put on armor and harness the chariots.

Throughout the way to the kingdom of the dead, Achilles held his head with cartridge. He cut his hair and put it in his friend’s hands. The sobs of those present continued all day.

Sheep, bulls, horses and dogs were sacrificed to fire.

As said Achilles, the body of Hector was handed over to the dogs, but they did not eat it. (Selective gourmets, apparently. They do not prefer heroes meat)

All the time he sat by the fire and watched the flame devour his friend.

This is what the plot demonstrates us David. And without his knowledge, it will be difficult for the audience to understand what is happening in the picture. However, this is not the only work of the artist that can be found in the game.

In addition to plot painting, Jacques Louis David also painted portraits to order. One of these unfinished works is the “portrait of Louise Truden”. He was ordered by the artist of the son -in -law Louise. The Truden family since the 17th century provided France by large civil servants, so they had their weight in society. The son -in -law invited David and other major artists to their Paris salon to fulfill their request.

In general, why from all kinds of artists a great accent is given to David’s work? In fact, the developers chose it for a reason.

The events unfolding in the game cover the Great French Revolution of 1789-1794. To convey this period as it was, people from Ubisoft turned to different sources, including artists. Jacques Louis David not just lived at that time, he directly took part in the revolution. The events of that period dragged the artist into his cycle. He began to act as a politician. In 1793, David became a member of the Convention, he took part in the condemnation of the king to execute. The artist organized massive revolutionary festivities in Paris. And even created the National Museum in the Louvre.

Conclusion

Well, dear visitors, thank you for taking part in an introductory excursion to repel painting in video games. We slipped through large segments of time to see the development of painting, and as it turned out: in addition to the fact that each era of art is trying to surpass the previous course, so in these attempts it has the ability to repeat ourselves. However, this does not prevent him from having weight and significance both for other standard areas of art and video games.
